    - J.Cole - Sideline Story

    Cole World: The Sideline Story

So some people may not be blown away by him.  He's not flashy...yet, but he has words that actually have meaning.  His beats are modest and not over-produced.  You know what though?  That's fine for a first album.  Earn your right in the scene.  His mixtapes and EPs that lead up to this studio album are like pre-season training for his main event.  A lot of artists are produced, this fool is producing his own tracks off the bat.  That's mad respectable.

Take your approach to the game humbly and you can be respected by your peers.

"Would you rather be underpaid or overrated?" - Jay-Z

It also says something when you're signed under Jay-Z with Roc-nation.  You can't disappoint and you're expected to work and that's exactly what he's doing.  Forget all the flashy antics, he's letting his flow do the work for him.  Reminiscent of Eminem's albums of late.  Tell your story and people will listen.

That is all.  Glad to know there are kids in this generation taking the work ethic seriously.  I'll save that blurb for another day.  His new album is going to be something G.O.O.D.

Fun + Phonetics + Melody = Funelody.  Genius.

A lot of times, people are drawn to the melody of the song and could care less what they are saying.  That can happen with foreign music especially.  You try to portray it by the emotion in the song and catching similar phrases that repeat within the song.

Again, it's another Bon Iver track but this time in collaboration with James Blake named Fall Creek Boys Choir.  It's cool how there is always a local connection to Justin's tracks.  It's something fimiliar in his life and very esoteric.  What makes this song cool is simply the addictive manner of the melody.  It's consistent like his Lost in the Woods track on the Blood Bank EP but if you start to listen closely, the lyrics actually are more than one line.  It's ridiculous how you can make the worlds sound so similar but the melody keeps you in a trance.  This is exactly what Kanye West's Love Lockdown does.  When you first hear the song, you think he's saying the same line over and over but really he's speaking a lyric in a hypnotic melody almost to the point of mumbling.

Decyphering the words it's half the fun, in my opinion.  Some songs are meant to be articulate and clean, some are made to be more cryptic and artistic and some songs are just meant to be stupid and fun.  You take it as you may.

    Music... I obsess over it.
